Geubuntu Moonlight

Geubuntu 7.04 – Prima Luna

A newcomer is arriving in town. A new Gnu / Linux Live (And installable) distro. Not another useless one, not something you’re going to avoid downloading.

Geubuntu is something new, something untried still, something that may lead the way to new possibilities.

I don’t believe in a very positive effect of the existence of so many distros in the Linux world. Sure, plurality is a nice thing but new users can get confused by the existence of so many distros….

Unless you create something new, trying to follow a way yet to be completely tested. That’s what I tried to do with Geubuntu. You’ll see soon. Just know that this distro needs your help, since I’m not a programmer. I’m a designer and that’s all. So stay tuned, news are going to come soon.

I even hope that in the future the new ideas of Geubuntu will be appreciated by the Ubuntu project itself, so that Geubuntu may become a new flavour of the official Ubuntu. For now, it is just a new distro created by me 🙂

Geubuntu is a project hosted and hatched by the great Italian initiative: InTiLinux Projects. In it’s space Geubuntu finds it’s future Website and it’s hosting, plus its forum. If you’ve got interesting Italian programs needing the instruments to grow or if you just have an interesting and innovative idea to apply in the Open Source and Gnu / Linux community, than don’t hesitate and visit InTiLinux Projects.

  1. If this is a mix (and an innovating mix) of Gentoo and Ubuntu – for example taking the list of applications of an Ubuntu LiveCD and compile and integrate them from portage to a LiveCD with the Ubuntu like modifications to look and themes for the apps-
then you will have a ready dev here 😉

  2. Ehm, sorry, it is not something related with Gentoo. I thought that from the Logo it would have been easy to guess what is it all about but you’ll have to wait and see a couple of days still….

  3. I read the text twice and did not find out what this geubuntu is all about! what is new? your text is pointless blabla.

  4. I guess you are incorporating Enlightenment into Ubuntu. OK…sounds interesting. But why? Is there an Enlightenment allegiance here? As I said, it sounds interesting…and I’ll probably try to run it on a secondary machine. Good luck and keep me up to date. 🙂

  5. From the logo, i would guess it’s ubuntu with Enlightenment as the default desktop.

  6. C’mon Johnd, don’t be too rude, the text IS useless bla bla 😀
I mean, it is just to create some suspence 😉

Well honeybear got a point there. So that is in effect the point of this distro, integrating E17 in Ubuntu but not only that alone… infact Enlightenment is not fully functional alone (It misses some important tools) because it principally works as a Window Manager (Yeah, it is so much more, we know…). So the point is creating a distro with a WORKING and 100% usable Enlightenment experience 🙂

The moment it is released, anyone is invited to test it out, experience all the goods and bads and try helping out the development if it is possible.

  7. Hmm… I really liked that Gentoo / Ubuntu idea… but I’m looking forward to seeing this play out. I didn’t have much luck when I tried to get E17 working with Dapper… Then again the laptop I was using was about 5 years old. Good luck!

  8. See Tim, that’s exactly the point. A lot of people try to install E17 without success. Or if they manage to do t, then they don’t know how to make an E17 system functional and usable. That’s exactly the goal of Geubuntu. To deliver an usable E17 distro, always remembering that E17 is beta software so it is not 100% stable.

  9. Great!!! But do you know Elbuntu??? Elbuntu has the same intents of Geubuntu… however… i’m a “good” debian packager and love e17… so if you want an halp, i’m here!!! 😛

Sorry to all, my english is very bad

    Bye

  10. P.S.
    Where can i get geubuntu???

  11. @dknew: Hi man! Where are you from? I’m from Italy. Geubuntu needs help very badly. I’m not a programmer but designer, so it is already too much that I managed to put togeter a nice distro…

The project is to be completely communitary as for the programming side, it really needs help from anyone. In the current stage, a deb packager is one of the most important things we need. So wellcome if you whanna help us! The moment the project is released we’ll be able to work on it togeter. I need particularly deb packages to create e Geubuntu-like system from a normal Ubuntu (Packages with settings, art, etc.)

As for Elbuntu, sure I know it but the goal of Geubuntu is completely different. Elbuntu things that E17 can work alone, as Desktop Environment would do (But E17 is not a DE). Geubuntu instead aims at creating a completely funzional E17 desktop heavily integrated with Gnome (That was what E16 did in the past, with Gnome or KDE). So that’s the new idea and as youc an see, it is very different from Elbuntu… also because Elbuntu is unusable by now, while Geubuntu will be fully functional and usable from the first release. Different goals, different distros 😀

  12. Ah, and you’ll get Geubuntu from its website very soon, the time to pack it with the latest addons I made and upload it and the Website will be released. You just have to keep looking this blog for news! 😀

  13. OK… thanks!!! I think geubuntu will be my new distro. 😀

  14. Really interesting!! Enlightenment/GNOME Ubuntu flavor. I’m going to try it very very soon. Downloading it just now.
    bye bye
